Sanitation Solutions Group (SSG) is the premium provider of latrine construction, latrine upgrades, pit emptying, and WASH management consulting services in Uganda.


The DuraSan is a modular latrine constructed from prefabricated concrete blocks. It is the highest quality latrine currrently available in the Uganda market. A one to three stance/stall DuraSan latrine can be constructed in as few as two days. Configurations of one to six stances/stalls are available. Customers can opt to purchase a complete latrine system (above-ground superstructure and below-ground substructure), an above-ground superstructure, or a below-ground substructure. DuraSan options include:

- Luxo Pan - A ceramic pour-flush latrine improvement pan

- Concrete floor slab - A sturdy replacement floor slab
- Tiles - Ceramic tiles can be installed on a floor slab and on latrine walls
- Tin Roof - A tin roof with optional rain gutter for water collection
- Bathroom - A DuraSan stance/stall with a drain in the floor slab, for bathing
- Handwashing Facility - A plastic water holder that can be filled directly or with rain water collected from a tin roof

Latrine Emtpying

Sanitation Solutions Group sells the Gulper manual pit emptying device and leases pit emptying equipment to sanitation entrepreneurs. For a monthly franchise fee, an entrepreneur can lease a branded motorized tricycle, a Gulper, safety clothing, and pit emptying tools/equipment. Franchised entrepreneurs receive training in pit emptying, marketing support, and business model development support.

SSG has four business models:
1.   Latrine Construction - Assembly of DuraSan modular latrines
2.   Latrine Upgrades - Distribution, sales, and installation of latrine upgrade components including the Luxo Pan and SaTo Pan
3.   Latrine Emptying - Franchising of pit emptying entrepreneurs, supplying them with motorized tricycles, Gulper manual pit emptying devices, protective clothing and gear, business model development support, and training
4.   Consulting - Management consulting and research services for WASH businesses and NGOs

The management team is comprised of four members with diverse backgrounds, united with the goal of scaling-up market-based sanitation in Uganda. They don't take themselves too seriously and are amused by sanitation-related humor, among other things.

Sherina Munyana - Chief Executive Officer

Sherina Munyana
Sherina is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at SSG. She brings to the table a wealth of experience from both profit and non-profit sectors specifically in communication, grants and financial management of projects focusing on value chains and local capacity building. Dubbed the Clint Eastwood of sanitation, this sanitation super-heroine was part of the core team in charge of the overall strategic direction for a market-based sanitation program implemented in Africa, Asia and Latin America. She has experience in business model development at different stages of the sanitation value chain and completed a MSc. in Development Management that further strengthens a philosophy geared towards sustainable development solutions, right in line with SSG’s mission. She calls the beautiful Pearl of Africa home and in her spare time, loves to read, travel and watch sport, her favorites being tennis, F1 and football.

Robert Makune - Commercial Manager
Robert Makune
Robert is the Commercial Manager at SSG. He ensures that all SSG clients are serviced to total satisfaction with the best customer experience. In charge of daily business operations; he has skills in business strategy, development and general management, sales and marketing, Brand and Client Relationship management, which he applies to ensure the profitability of SSG. He has a wealth of experience in development work providing business development support to SMEs in sanitation, and the Private Sector in the Media and Fast Moving consumer goods (Beverage) industries where he practiced Business development, Sales and Client Relationship management. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. With a keen interest in learning new ‘things’, his personal interests include personal development material, chess, music, football and rugby.
Mikael Baker - Business Advisor (MBAs Without Borders Fellow)
Mikael Baker
Mikael is the Business Advisor at SSG, utilizing skills in strategy, finance, brand management, marketing, supply/value chain management, and information & communications technology (ICT) to push the mission of SSG. He has experience in international development, management consulting, ICT consulting, public health, marketing research, and completed an MBA at the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business in 2012. He has worked with businesses, NGOs, research institutions, and universities in Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. He was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and calls Washington, D.C., USA, his hometown. His interests include impact investing, social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility (CSR), technology, cycling, kayaking, rafting, snowboarding, surfing, music, and travel.

George Drummond - Innovation Engineer (Engineers Without Borders UK Fellow)
George DrummondGeorge is the Innovation Engineer at SSG. After graduating from the University of Bath in 2013 with a Masters in Architectural Engineering, he was recruited by Engineers Without Borders UK to work on a 12-month placement in partnership with Water For People Uganda. Branded as The SaniHub, the project involved collaborating with local fabricators, governments, research institutions and businesses to develop a range of appropriate sanitation technologies that could be taken to market. One year on, several of these technologies have been declared market ready, and George’s roles within SSG include providing technical training, advice and support to SSG members, further product refinement, defining quality standards for SSG members, and identifying market opportunities for new innovations that are developed within the SaniHub. When he is not busy designing toilets, George enjoys playing football, running, and exploring Uganda on the local motorcycle ‘boda-boda’.
